Early life

Mohanlal was born in a Hindu Nair family from Pathanamthitta district, Kerala to mother Shanthakumari and father Vishwanathan Nair on 21 May 1960. He had an elder brother, Pyarelal. His father was a Law Secretary in the Kerala Government. His family was "close-knit with traditional values" and laid emphasis on education.Mohanlal studied at Government Model School, Thycad and graduated with a degree in Commerce from Mahatma Gandhi College,Thiruvananthapuram. As a student, he used to act in plays at school and college. In 1972, Mohanlal was selected as the best actor in his school competing against students from tenth grade while he was in sixth grade.[Mohanlal acted in his first film Thiranottam in a comic role[12] while attending college. According to Mohanlal, in college, he was part of a group which was passionate about filmmaking and he acted in Thiranottam at their suggestion and would have become a chef if movies did not happen in his life. The film's producer, Bharath CineGroup was owned by his friends,[12] including Maniyan Pilla Raju and Priyadarshan.[He started working in this film on September 4, 1978[citation needed]. The film was completed and censored, but was not released.
